Each year, Whatcom WRITES invites writers of all ages and experience levels to explore a theme inspired by the current Whatcom READS book. Top entries are selected for publication in the Whatcom WRITES anthology.” -Village Books

On February 15th, I attended a group reading event at Village Books, where I read an excerpt from my story “The Baby”, which was chosen for the 2026 Whatcom WRITES Anthology: Family – Formed, Found, and Chosen. To be able to hold my work in my hands and see my story in print next to other talented writers is such an honor! I can’t thank the amazing people at Village Books enough for giving local writers this opportunity.

“The Baby” is a Western short story inspired by my grandparents. My grandma was an alfalfa farmer who passed away a few years ago, leaving behind a collection of Western books and movies that hold a special place in my heart. I have fond memories of the time I lived on her farm, waking up to the neon orange sunrise, hearing the water spray from the wheeline irrigation, and watching the honorable cowboys on television always stand up for what’s right.

I had a lot of fun writing this story and am grateful to have worked alongside my fellow writer and friend M. Alexandria Mejia whose piece “Family.” was also chosen to be published. The anthology is available for purchase at Village Books in Fairhaven.
